Funding
Under the umbrella of PIER, the University of Hamburg and DESY promote cooperation across the two institutions and between the PIER research and competence fields, i.e. particle and astroparticle physics, nanoscience, photon science, infection and structural biology, theoretical physics, accelerator research, and artefact profiling. For this purpose, the University of Hamburg and DESY have established the PIER Idea Fund. The aim of this seed money funding scheme is to enable researchers of the two institutions to identify complementary strengths, facilitate the use of synergies, promote the development of future joint research projects, and establish contacts to international colleagues in their respective fields.
DESY and the University of Hamburg researchers who have registered as PIER Scientists can apply for financial support of their research activities in three funding lines: PIER Seed Projects, PIER Workshops and PIER Short Visits. In addition, the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School (PHGS) offers the PHGS Travel Awards for doctoral students.

PIER helps you to do so by providing seed funding in various formats, travel awards for doctoral students and information on current open calls and prizes in your field of research.

FUNDED PROJECTS
Since the PIER Idea Fund was established in 2012, roundabout 65 funding proposals by PIER Scientists have been granted.

TOTAL FUNDING
PIER has funded joint research projects of DESY, UHH and UKE scientists with a total amount of over 2.4 million euros so far.

FUNDS RAISED
So far, close to twelve million euros of third party funding have been raised by PIER Scientists based on their PIER seed funding.

Up to now, PHGS has supported international research activities of 140 DESY and Universität Hamburg PhD students with travel grants.
